Darren Syddall, founder of Eastern Origins, says "I'm a joiner by trade so when I was fortunate enough to find myself living in Honk Kong I was naturally interested in the products that were being produced locally."

He was impressed by the craftsmanship of the collectable and gift pieces that he saw from Indonesia and India - so impressed that upon his return to England he decided to open a retail store to test them out on the general public.  "My customers appreciated these hand crafted goods as much as I did" says Darren "Eastern Origins has become a tremendous success and following the opening in 1996 life has been pretty hectic."

Awards

Darren was tipped for success by The Prince's Youth Business Trust, a charity with Charles, HRH The Prince of Wales, as it's President.  The Prince's Trust sponsors young people in business and it was them who provided the necessary start up funding that allowed Darren to realize his business idea.

In 1997 we were recognised by The Livewire in Business Start Up Awards. This award for innovation and business planning is sponsored by the Oil Company Shell and the food giant Nestle. The judges were receptive to Eastern Origins attitudes towards ecological and ethical issues. "Whether it is carved Buddha figures using wood from an approved plantation or Indonesian Money Boxes from a small local producer, we are always attentive to the environmental and economic impact of our products" says Darren.

Our retail operation is based in Richmond, North Yorkshire, England.  With it's classic castle, medieval marketplace and wealth of hidden corners Richmond might easily be described as the quintessential historic English town.
